1924 is Norton's Year of
Firsts. Alec
Bennett wins the TT, using the new ohv engine. "Pa"
Norton fortunately lives to see the success, but dies on 21st
April, 1925, aged 56. In winter 1926/27 Wally Moore designs
the first Norton ohc engine, the "Cricket Bat", later
taking it with him to NSU. |
|
| Moores ohc engine is
fast but fragile. It gives Norton a TT victory in 1927, but its
inherent weaknesses become obvious. After Moores departure to NSU,
where he "designs" a carbon copy of the Norton
CS1, Arthur Carroll draws the legendary new OHC engine in 1929.
This engine will give Norton an unequalled string of successes in
the thirties and fifties. Only the Kompressor BMW, ridden by Schorsch Meier,
can beat the Nortons at the 1939 TT due to its superior horsepower.
With the ban of compressors in post-war racing things get back to how
they should be! |
