The 1992 TT is the
glorious farewell of the Norton rotary. Philippe
Le Roux is removed from his post in early 1991; his successor, Macdonald,
is but a liquidator called in by the banks. Whilst he
floggs off what he considers saleable, he tells the Norton
shareholders fairy tales about saving the firm as well as their
investments. A BBC programme on Norton gives a rather different,
and unfortunately very true view of Norton's real situation. |
|
| Before Macdonald sells
the remains of Norton to Canadian asset strippers, he "develops"
the F2. In the period 1991-93 the F1Sport ("TT") and
some Commanders are built from the leftover stock of parts and
sold at below-cost prices. The British press is extatic: "Macdonald builds affordable
Nortons" (MCN). In 1993 the Scalbanias take over. They try
to sell Norton on from day one but fail. Their financiers, the Aquilinis, want their money back, but are landed with a
motorcycle factory that makes no motorcycles instead. |
