The "Commando"
comes out in 1967, at first in the sensational "Fastback"
form. Its lines, that later become a trendsetter for the
industry, are not popular at first. The
"Norvil" production racers, developed and competently
raced by racer-engineer Peter Williams, are very successful. In 1973
the government talks Dennis Poore into a "reverse takeover"
of the crumbling Triumph/BSA empire through Norton, at the time a
sound, but small, concern. |
|
| The Norvil production
racer (not to be mistaken for todays rather sorry copies) becomes
a variant of the Commando range, together with the
"Roadster", "S", "SS", "Interstate",
"Hi Rider" and in 1973, "John Player Replica".
Interstate und Roadster are produced as 850cc models from 73
onwards until the end in 1977. NVT (Norton- Villiers-Triumph) is
wound up in 1975.The liquidator has another 1500 Commandos
produced from spares left in the stores, and Poore buys the
remaining stock. |
