1963 is the last year
of Norton singles, and only the twins stay in production. AJS
models with Norton badges (ES2Mk2) are of no concern here.
As Joe Berliner, the US importer and best customer of Norton,
is always clamouring for more bikes, mongrels using AMC and
Norton parts are being produced for him until AMC goes finally
under. |
|
| AMC is
liquidated in 1966, and Manganeze Bronce under Dennis Poore as
chairman buys Norton. Poore wants a completely new
model. He wants to replace the old "Dominator" engine
by now stretched to 745cc in the "Atlas". To isolate
the rider from engine vibrations, a new principle, the "Isolastics", are invented, rubber mounting engine, gearbox and
rear swinging arm in the chassis as a seperate unit. As the
planned new engine proves to be an engineering desaster, the
Atlas engine is pressed into service yet again, and the
resulting new bike
called the "Commando". |
