Commando Clutch

Whilst the various part numbers can
be found in all Commando parts lists, let me explain peculiarities and the
different types of the Commando clutch over the years.
Early Commandos have only 4 friction
plates (very early the "lost stamp" type #06-0749, later the
"fibre" plates #06-1339) and 3 steel plates (#06-0746).
The later (sinter friction plate) clutch has 5 friction (#06-3741) and 4
steel plates (#06-0746 again).
The diaphragm spring (#06-0770) only
works in a limited expansion range, so the total height of the
friction/steel plate pack is important.
The early pack with only 4 friction and 3 steel plates is thinner than the
later 5 sinter friction plate and 4 steel plates pack.
We therefore have two different pressure plates- the "thick"
06-0745 and the "thin" 06-3768.
Mixture of one pack with the other end plate will not work, but is often
done in error in a rebuild using parts from different years.
Where clutch action is heavy, improvement is possible with skimmed steel
plates used as spacers to adjust the working range of the diaphragm.
A very important part is clip
#06-0752 (#14 in the above drawing), which locates in a groove in the
gearbox mainshaft and against which spacer 06-0747 (#15 in the above
picture) presses.
Clip and spacer hinder the clutch to expand towards the gearbox and,
thereby, take to pressure off the plate pack.
The NOC Commando service Notes once wrongly stated this clip had no
purpose and could be left out- which shows the author had not understood
the Commando clutch.
I replace this clip, which could be stronger for the purpose, with a new
one every time I take a clutch off the mainshaft.
Another important ingredient for a
working clutch is an oil in the primary chaincase that has no additives on
molly basis.
I therefore recommend a basic Monograde engine oil, or the oil I use,
which is an ATF oil.
I have been using Shell Donax TX for several years now, including in our
Commando Racer which runs the triplex chain in oil, and have yet to
encounter a slipping clutch.
Early clutch sprockets had the
backplate only pinned in, and the tiny pins tended to shear off. Later
sprockets have the back plate welded in. I recommend to convert to the
later system.
