Why Genuine Norton Motors Racing
Headsteady?
The Norton Racing headsteady,
called "Norvil" after the Norton Race Department at
the time (short for "Nor"ton
"Vil"liers), was a third isolastic bolted to the
cylinderhead. It replaced the flimsy two triangular sheet
metal pieces , that connect, by means of a sheet metal
structure and two
wobbly silent blocs, the cylinder head to the top frame tube, thus
making the assembly far more rigid. Whilst this means an
increase in vibration against the standart arrangement, it gives a
far more rigid connection in the plane rear wheel/top frame
tube, thus giving the rider more control under hard cornering
or in bends with an uneven road surface.
For 25 years we reluctantly
purchased so-called "Norvil Headsteadies" in
England.
The headsteadies we
received were, plainly speaking, crap.In the last three years
we had a final fling in purchasing these headsteadies from
different British sources. Without naming well-known suppliers
names, the following
observations were made:
1. The supplier of longest
standing in the industry has yet to supply a headsteady that
can be bolted down without having to tilt the engine over to one
side under the main frame tube before fitting his
headsteady;
2. Most suppliers gladly "forget" the third bolt that has to
go into the cylinder head, thus giving the whole assembly its
basic stability, as fitting it would call for some though as
well as some dimensional accuracy of the head steady.
3. One supplier actually has to, as the structure he supplies
is far from plain where it should be bolted to the cylinder
head; it is rather elegantly waved...... and therefore canīt
be bolted on.
4. Ingeniously, a further supplier has long ovals as holes for
the bolts, following the wisdom "this way it will fit
somehow!"
5. Of the headsteadies we received not a single one was propperly
adjustable.

After our last
desastrous purchase we decided enough was enough.
We are no longer prepared to pay good money for bad
goods that have to be rectified before fitting them to a
Norton Commando.
We have now, therefore, made our very own Genuine Norton
Motors Racing
Headsteady.
The main structure is CNC-machined from aircraft
specification aluminium; so are the side plates and
the clamp for the frame tube.
The Genuine Racing Headsteady comes
with special allen bolts and fits straight onto any
Commando without modifications.

Quality Made
in Germany can not compete pricewise with the
so-called "Norvil"-headsteadies. Structures
shakily welded together by some granddad with no
qualifications -bar the fact he is cheap and writes no
invoices- in his chickenshed at the back of his garden.
But as opposed to those lamentable scrap metal things
that fit nothing we sell you a Norton headsteady that
can be fitted and is actually of use on the bike!
Our price isEuro 249,80 including German V.A.T. (at
16%), our export price into non-EC-countries is Euro
215,34. |
